I must admit, When i began this course I was very skeptical of me being able to use the knowledge gained in this course in my classroom. But after realizing the effect it has on the students learning, there is no doubt in my mind I'll try my best to implement this when I graduate form DTEEA; if just for my class. It's tough to fight against tradition, but I'm willing to take it on =]!!
We need to realize that we are dealing with the lives of students and we need to provide all the opportunities we had or may not have had. Do unto others what we want them to do unto us...sounds familiar.
I have my own personal issues with education and I want mr. emmanuel to make a post called "What is your problem with education?", so I can vent a little. But if not mr. emmanuel, I'll make my own. Stay Tuned....
Technology is essential in today's classroom. We need to get the students interested in learning again(Intrinsic Motivation)! Technology provides many opportunities for teachers and we should take full advantage of them. It's time to make a difference =]!!!

I do agree with you Landy. My experience at school was baically lecture and dictation of information. ICT's were non existent in teaching concepts and as a visual and kinesthetic learner I believe I was deprived of experiencing and discovering concepts actively. The various uses of technology in classrooms will definitely be incorporated in my future teaching career.
ReplyDeleteIn response to your question, What is my problem with education?', I have a problem here at DTEEA in the methods in which I am taught. I am taught in the exact method that I am constantly told that I should not teach the students. Isn't that ironic?
Ironic definitely is the best way to describe it. Everything seems so abstract. Lecturers speak about different learning styles and abilities but where is the creativity in the teaching (well with the exception of Mr. Emmanuel of course) "All of SALCC is a stage and we are just players" I have always been using the technology but being part of this ICT class has foster more creativity and interest to do a lot more. Yes Landy I echo what you are saying about using the technology and maybe we will get the boys attention in class.
ReplyDeleteI think ironic is an understatement. I can only speak for myself in my classes. I have observed that very few (2) of my lecturers actually practice what they ALL preach by catering to all students. Is it because we are adult learners that there is this impression that only one method of "teaching" works? The lecture method? For some most learning is actually acquired through the internet because the school environment is so nebulous.
ReplyDeleteI am glad I have chose to attend college before I started teaching so in that way I can DEFINATELY make EFFECTIVE use of technology in my classroom. Get the children motivated, express their creativity, in some cases voice their opinions, take advantage of their own learning, be teachers in their own way, and save the poor children from the hard times I went through and still going through. Blackboard and white chalk, reader unfriendly books, teacher standing infront of the class doing all the talking and children lost afraid or too shy to say something.
I agree with Landy...time for change...time to make a difference.
I am smiling!
ReplyDeleteThese are very insightful comments.
ReplyDeletewow nixx....im impressed...
ReplyDeletewe're all saying the lecture method isn't effective and it doesnt cater to all the learning style and technology should be of paramount importance in our classroom... i agree to some extent...(science, body systems to be precise should not be taught with chalk and board or some dark photocopies)...but do we have the necessary resources available to use the technology? how are we going to use technology without the resources at our schools?
I definitely agree with you Landy, when I started the Technology class, I was not sure what to expect. I must say the information & knowledge gained has been very inspiring. It has given me the desire to want to make a differnce in the way lessons are taught and presented to students.
ReplyDeleteAs for the methods being used here to teach us at DTEEA,I don't quite get it. I thought we were here to learn how to be the best teachers possible. We are being taught the way things SHOULD be done, but seeing something different. Isn't modelling & setting the example the best way to teach? Well, I guess we will learn what NOT to do from what we are going through now.
And Tacie I understand your concerns on the availability of the recources, but we have to start somewhere, if we all keep saying the resources are not available and do nothing, we will never move forward.
